The South of Scotland and North of England

Pigeon Shooters name - Paul Bond
Part of UK bag was shot - North of England
The total number of pigeons shot = 79
Gender - Male
The gun you used - 12 bore
Bag Date - 19/12/01
The Crop type - Barley Stubble
The day details - It was cold and frosty, 8.30 start and from then there was a steady trickle of birds all day. I used my pigeon magnet with deadly affect at a range of about 20 yards and the gun which I was using was a browning gti 32" 3/8 -5/8 teague chokes. The woodpigeons stopped at about 2 pm. After this I then shot 34 crows, I found that they did not like pigeon magnet and they flared away just out of range. I then turned it off then they decoyed a treat.

My opinion It is good to see people at this time of year taking the effort to shoot corvids such as crows as in the run up to the breeding season if not controlled they can be devastating to wildlife preying on chicks and eggs in particular but also they have been known to peck lambs eyes out. It is interesting to see the crows did not like the pigeon magnet perhaps if you tried a couple of crows on it instead they would come in closer?

Pigeon Shooters name - "Pigeonalldaylong"
Part of UK bag was shot - South Scotland (Fife)
The total number of pigeons shot = 75
Gender - Male
The gun you used - 12 bore
Bag Date - 31/12/01
The Crop type - Rape
The day details - Strong North wind with strong sun shine. Birds flighting from West lying roosting woods to flapper and dead birds, it was a good day.

My opinion From what I can work out "pigeonalldaylong" is as pigeon shooting guide service which you pay to have a day out shooting, www.pigeonalldaylong.co.uk is the link.

Pigeon Shooters name - Craig Denman
Part of UK bag was shot - South Scotland
The total number of pigeons shot = 88
Gender - Male
The gun you used - 12 bore
Bag Date - 17/11/01
The Crop type - Barley Stubble
The day details -Bright and *SUNNY* (yes we do have the odd sunny day in Scotland ) windy on and off all day. Set up a magnet with 2 deeks and about 10 deeks in field, dead birds previously shot. Using a Remi 3 shot I fired about 150 shots to get a bag of 88 ( ok not great but it was really enjoyable) looking forward to shooting over some winter barley soon, report to follow.

My opinion Thanks a lot for the report it is nice to see someone has a bit of sun shine at this time of the year it is freezing here!! Bright and sunny weather is usually a curse for pigeon shooters - since decoys reflect- however as yours were the 'real mcpigeon' that wouldn't have been the case. Seems like your being a bit harsh on your shooting, by my maths i calculate, 59% success rate, now I was once told by an old friend that 1 in 3 was going good! I look forward to your next report, pigeons are a bit thin on the ground where I am, now I know where they all are!

Pigeon Shooters name - David T
Part of UK bag was shot - South Scotland
Nickname DTT
The total number of pigeons shot = 26
Gender - Male
The gun you used - Air Rifle
Bag Date - October
The Crop type - Barley Stubble
The day details -It was an overcast day hardly any wind. The barley had been cut about a fornight before we shot. Me and a shooting partner set up our hide at about 11 0'clock and put 20 odd deeks out in the park. Had only a few birds coming into the decoys till about 3 o'clock, then they started coming in rapidly. Must have had about 50-60 pigeons come into the decoys throughout the whole day. Managed to bag 26 as we were going for headshots only. Shot all the birds with an air-rifle as the landowner had problems with previous shooters with shotguns (stray pellets were hitting the roof of his house, barns etc). This is fairly new shooting ground so we are hoping to have more success next year when the barley is just planted

My opinion Headshots only! That is probably the best way of shooting pigeons with an airifle but getting the pellet into a pigeons head is like hitting a 2p piece, that is some nice shooting! Maybe you would like to help me add a new section to this site about shooting them with an air rifle. I am sure the visitors will find it useful and although most rules must be the same I am sure you must have to tweak it slightly to manage to get the pigeons to land so frequently and in numbers of 50-60. I find that pigeons will land amongst my pattern however since I use a shotgun I tend to shoot them as they are flying. If you had been using a shotgun with light winds I think the pigeons would have heard the shots aswell so really an airgun sounds like it was suited to the day. Thanks for the new report to the South of Scotland :-)
